Access 2019/365 – Level 1

Most companies have a lot of data, from customer and employee records to product specification data and billing and scheduling systems. By learning the fundamentals of Microsoft Access, you can learn how to effectively store that data in a way that makes it easy to update, query and report on for a range of outputs. This is an intensive Access course that introduces participants to the concepts of creating relational databases using MS Access. Microsoft Access is a very powerful database application, designed to save you time and make creating relational databases easier.

Who should attend this course?

This course is aimed at people who are likely to use a database on a regular basis: representatives, sales staff, sales managers, advertisers, marketing, public relations, freelancers, personnel managers etc…


Ability to manage files (save, save as, search…). Knowledge of Excel is a plus.

The course is structured around two days of theory and one day of practice during which you will learn the fundamentals of Microsoft’s relational database manager.


  • Understanding what a relational database managing system is (differences between Excel & Access)
  • Understanding the Access environment (goal, specific vocabulary…)
  • Knowing the purpose of the various objects (tables, queries, forms, reports)


  • Using data view
    • Viewing, adding, deleting and updating records
    • Searching, sorting and filtering
    • Table formatting
  • Creating tables
    • Understanding design view
    • Knowing the various data types (basic and secondary types)
    • Mastering field properties

Selection queries

  • Understanding the basic query concept
  • Mastering the query creation interface (selecting, field moving, adding, removing a table)
    • Sorting query results
    • Hiding a field in a query result
    • Saving a query
    • Selecting record (filtering)
    • Using logical criteria AND / OR
    • Using operators such as « like », « ? », « * »
    • Using parameters « [] »
    • Other operators : « Null » « Not »
    • Creating calculated fields
    • Using the expression builder
    • Creating a calculated field using a formula
    • Learning how to use Access functions
    • Formatting a calculated field (format and caption)
    • Inserting a parameter in a calculation
    • Grouping
    • Using statistical functions (sum, average, min, max, count)
    • Other criteria : « Where »


  • Understanding the necessity of relationships
  • Knowing the 3 types of relationships (1 to 1, 1 to many, many to many)
  • Understanding the concept of primary key and foreign key
  • Mastering referential integrity
  • Implementing a 1 to many relationship in Access
  • Creating selection queries that use several tables
